Member Engagement in Training Bootcamps is a Key to Success in Attaining Industry Workforce Development Goals

A key component of ICPI’s workforce development program consists of holding Boot Camp events to start installers off right with best practices for successful projects. ICPI members have held Boot Camps in Michigan, Colorado, California, Nova Scotia, and two in Virginia. The two-day class and hands-on training give novices a chance to try out paver installation.

ICPI has also connected with Goodwill Industries, whose mission is job training and placement. Most people know Goodwill from their thrift stores, but their mission is helping people in need reach their full potential through learning and employment. Last June, we partnered with Goodwill of North Georgia at its job training facility in Decatur. Six people selected by Goodwill had the opportunity learn and try out the basics of paver installation. Several hardscape contractors also attended in search of potential employees. All six trainees have found employment and future training sessions are being planned.

From both the producer and contractor perspective, a Boot Camp is a great way to start expanding your installer base. ICPI staff has already trained 18 instructors to provide the course. So, this opportunity is waiting for you to check into and implement. We’ve made it easy for you to host a Boot Camp – a short, recorded webinar explaining how to sponsor a Boot Camp is available on the ICPI website. Program materials include a student manual for only seven dollars a copy, a free instructor’s manual, PowerPoint presentations, videos, and an exam. A Spanish version of the manual and PowerPoints will be available in November 2019.

All Boot Camp materials are available online at

ICPI developed these Boot Camp resources, but it’s going to take members like you to make this program successful at the local level.
